A bettor earned a substantial sum on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro immediately preceding it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about the possibility of profiting from non-public details of the event.

Sudden Shift in Wagers

Wagers on Polymarket, a blockchain-based service, that Nicolás Maduro would be out of power by the close of the month increased in the time leading up to President Donald Trump stated on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been taken into custody.

A particular user, which registered on the site recently and made four bets, all on political events in Venezuela, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a starting bet of $32,537.

The identity is unknown. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Announcement

Trading information shows that participants estimated the likelihood of a political change at just a low 6.5 percent in the late afternoon of the Friday before the event.

However these probabilities had increased to eleven percent by late Friday night and spiked dramatically in the first hours of January 3rd, pointing to a sudden change in positions just before the official statement was made.

"This specific wager has all the hallmarks of a bet based on non-public details," said an industry expert.

A handful of other traders also made tens of thousands of dollars from similar wagers.

Regulatory Scrutiny Grows

Elected officials are growing concerned.

Proposed legislation introduced on recently seeks to ban government employees from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a market.

Market Background

Prediction markets have surged in popularity in the past few years, with participants able to bet on everything from elections to politics.

The industry were examined under the Biden administration. However it has found a more favorable environment during the current presidency.

Trading on insider information is against the law in the stock market, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market industry.

A spokesperson for a competing service said their site "strictly forbids such activities of any form."
