European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says
The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
