Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The former head of state was convicted of planning a armed takeover in last fall and given more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he remained under confinement pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a preventative measure after recent developments were revealed.

This involved attempting to break his tracking device and a call for a demonstration that could enable a possible escape.

In a filing authorising the custody, the magistrate said information from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

Background on Conviction

He was found guilty of heading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Lula.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a plot which included plans to kill his opponent and his running partner, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was stopped because it couldn't obtain the backing of the armed forces officials. His successor was inaugurated without problem on 1 January 2023.
