Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.

Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors are granted the ability to question specific calls from the chair umpire, following the practice already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development arrives only a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
